Cracow: Market squareModel United Nations is an education activity focusing on civics, communications, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. The founding idea of the Model United Nations is that "Conflict resolution and diplomacy is to be experienced and not just observed". Due to that, during the MUN conferences students take on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of a UN body. The participants are obliged to research a country and represent it diplomatically in order to investigate international issues as well as debate, deliberate, consult, and finally develop solutions to the world problems. During the simulation the participants employ a variety of communications and critical thinking skills in order to defend and advance the policies of their country.
UN The objective is to seek - through discussion, negotiation and debate - solutions to the various problems of the world: e.g. questions of human rights, economic development, disarmament, refugees as well as war and peace issues. The adoption of views and attitudes other than their own as well as the involvement and interaction with other young people from around the world combine to give the participants a deep insight into the world's problems and to make them aware of the causes of conflicts between nations. What is more - thanks to a break-away from national self-interests - the delegates develop true international cooperation. All that constitute for the growing popularity of MUN sessions in the most remote parts of the world.
